Flora Food Group Clinches Global Sustainability Award for Revolutionary Paper Packaging.
Amsterdam, Netherlands - 28th October 2024 - Flora Food Group has been awarded the prestigious World Sustainability Award for Eco Design, recognising their groundbreaking paper-based packaging for plant-based spreads. The innovative solution, developed through a four-year collaboration with industry partners Footprint, MCC Verstraete, Pagès, and Emsur, represents a significant breakthrough in sustainable packaging design.
The revolutionary tub, made from compressed wet paper fibres, offers a unique combination of durability and environmental benefits. Unlike conventional alternatives, the packaging is both waterproof and oil-resistant while maintaining complete recyclability. The tubs have earned Conventional Plastic Free Certification and are produced using paper from PEFC-certified suppliers, underlining the company's commitment to responsible sourcing.
"This innovation represents a pivotal moment in sustainable packaging design," says Karina Cerdeira, Head of Packaging & Artwork at Flora Food Group. "We've created a solution that not only meets our rigorous performance standards but also aligns perfectly with our environmental commitments. The ability to produce a mono-material, fully recyclable package that can withstand the demands of food storage while being environmentally responsible is a game-changer for our industry."
"This represents a defining moment in our journey. When we first proposed creating a paper pack for plant-based spreads, many said it couldn't be done. Today, we've not only achieved what seemed impossible but set a new industry standard. This innovation perfectly exemplifies Flora Food Group's commitment to delivering the next generation of delicious, natural and nutritious food that is more sustainable than dairy equivalents." David Haines, Group CEO of Flora Food Group.
A key distinguishing feature of the new packaging is its plastic-liner-free design, allowing consumers to simply clean, dry, and recycle the tubs alongside regular paper and cardboard waste. This has been verified by a leading European recycling company, ensuring seamless integration into existing recycling streams.
The company has implemented the packaging solution across multiple markets including the UK, The Netherlands and Austria and plans to launch in other markets across Europe in the coming months. Demonstrating its long-term commitment to sustainable packaging solutions.
